Alachua County Animal Resources has temporarily suspended cat and kitten adoptions through June 30 after an increase in upper respiratory infections among cats entering the shelter.
According to an Alachua County press release, the temporary suspension began Tuesday, June 23, and will allow shelter staff to monitor the health of cats and kittens, assess the spread of illness and provide treatment to affected animals.
Upper respiratory infections, commonly known as “kitty colds,” are common in cats, particularly during the summer months. While the illnesses are generally treatable, they can spread rapidly in shelters with large animal populations.
To help reduce the spread of illness, Animal Resources is asking residents to avoid bringing cats or kittens to the shelter during the temporary suspension if possible. Instead, pet owners are encouraged to contact other local shelters or rescue organizations for assistance.
Dog adoptions will continue as scheduled and are not affected by the temporary closure.
Animal Resources plans to resume cat and kitten adoptions on Tuesday, June 30, provided conditions remain stable.
