Still rather new to the Gainesville food scene, Scuola Pizza opened in March of 2021. The owners moved from Greece to Gainesville and started a restaurant that mixes European cuisines. However, pizza is Scuola’s bestselling item, and for good reason.

The dough is made in house with fresh ingredients and flame baked. Reviews rave about how the pizza is light, crispy and boasts a tangy and flavorful sauce.

Fan favorites are the Scuola Pizza, topped with pepperoni, Italian sausage, ground beef, mushrooms, onions, bell peppers or Big Nick’s Pie, which is Frank’s Buffalo Sauce, ranch, chicken and bacon for a less traditional take.

The pizza is a traditional Italian style made with sourced Italian ingredients. Even the brick pizza ovens that V Pizza uses are shipped in from Italy. The results? A crispy (slightly burnt) quality pizza.

V Pizza also has a special pizza of the week that alternates on new creations submitted from the team.

For a taste of authentic New York pizza, try Peppino’s, a small family-owned business. The owner is from Queens and brings over 17 years of restaurant experience.

All of the dough is made in house daily, and Peppino’s uses the freshest ingredients. The results? Reviews rave about the authentic New York pizza flavor with some saying its better than a New York or New Jersey slice.

Try Joe’s Favorite, based on the owner’s preferences for the perfect slice, which includes bacon, onions, mushrooms, tomatoes, fresh basil and ricotta cheese.

  • Location: 3731 West University Ave.
  • Hours: Noon-9 p.m. Sun., closed Mon., 11 a.m.-9 p.m. Tue.-Thur., 11 a.m.-10 p.m. Fri.-Sat.

You missed Leonardo’s pizza at millhopper shopping. Deep dish pizza with great sauce, sausage, mushrooms and everything else you want. AND the Garlic Rolls….can’t be anything better

Alan

Yes! Tragic miss.

Big Leo, garlic knots, eggplant parm and awesome lasagna, to name but a few! Excellent.

Nowadays I’d say I Sole Mio and Piesanos are legitimate peers to them.

Austin

Villagios Pizzeria rivals this list despite being in Newberry. If you like all the toppings then ask for a large deluxe.

Gary Donner

I concur.

Gordon

You left out a Gainesville staple for over 30 years…

Leonardo’s

Angel Cogar

I got a margarita pizza from scuola. It was maybe 5 pieces of mozzarellaon the entire pie, and one shred of basil per slice. Seriously, the most pathetic example of anything calling itself a pizza.

Barbara

I do not know how you can discuss the best pizzas in Gainesville and omit Paisanos. Local, delicious, reasonably priced, friendly service – what’s not to like. I especially like the thin-crust Antico pizza, but my husband prefers the meat lovers, and my grandson likes the white pizza.

Kevin

Leonardo’s???

Jeremy

Scuola’s 🔥🔥

Olivia…you should trek just a little further west on Newberry Rd (hway 26). Turn left at the light. About 1/4.mile on the left.is Vilalagos Pizza.
It’s a hole in the wall. But super good food.

Lyle Livengood

Any top 5 pizza list in Gainesville that does not include Leonardo’s is suspect.

John

I first ate Leonardo’s pizza in 1974. It was then, and is today, the best pizza in Florida. I don’t think your reviewers understand what good pizza is.

On November 30, 2023 The Gainesville Sun posted an article about the best pizza in Florida.

Jay Snyder

You forgot the only pizza place that has been in business since 1976 and is still a GREAT PIZZA PLACE!!!!!

Margaret Denny

Large pies at Satchel’s are priced from $33 to $35 dollars.. Really????

Robin Nelson

Olivia went to UCF and lived in Orlando. Maybe that’s why the list left off Leonardo’s? She just doesn’t know what she doesn’t know.
