The Gainesville Amateur Radio Society is inviting the public to explore the history, technology and modern applications of amateur radio during a special presentation on Saturday, Aug. 15, in Micanopy.
The free event will start at 2 p.m. at the Micanopy Branch Library (706 NE Cholokka Blvd.) and will take attendees on a visual and historical journey through the evolution of radio communications, highlighting the ways amateur radio has changed from the 1950s to today’s high-tech systems.
Visitors will learn about the progression of ham radio technology, including modern digital communication modes, satellite tracking and global internet-linked networks used by amateur radio operators around the world.
The presentation also will examine the important role ham radio operators can play during emergencies. When severe storms or other disasters disrupt cell towers, internet infrastructure and local power grids, amateur radio operators can provide critical communications when conventional systems are unavailable.
In addition to exploring the technology and history of ham radio, attendees will have an opportunity to meet local amateur radio operators, learn about the licensing process and discover how to become involved with active local amateur radio clubs.
The Gainesville Amateur Radio Society encourages anyone interested in electronics, communications, technology, history or emergency preparedness to attend and learn more about the expansive world of amateur radio.
