Alachua County has opened a new trail loop within the Phifer Flatwoods Preserve, located about halfway between the cities of Hawthorne and Gainesville.

The new 1.4-mile White Pond Loop circles the man-made pond before returning to the Turpentine Loop Trail. The new trail uses land purchased in 2020 through the Wild Spaces Public Places surtax.

The entrance to the preserve is at 10748 SE County Road 2082 with parking on the road shoulder or around one mile to the east along the Gainesville-Hawthorne Trail.

Can’t fix roads, but more money spent on a trail in the middle of nowhere that will get limited use. In the past they have responded “the money is allocated for that purpose, we can’t spend it on anything else….”. They allocated it, they could un-allocate it and re-allocate it. That is a response that says they think you are all stupid.

You need to educate yourself on how these referendums are drafted. We voted for wild spaces funds to be used for this not roads. What really needs to happen use gas tax money on roads not RTS.

Love it, so excited to check it out this weekend!
