The Florida Public Archaeology Network and the A. Quinn Jones Museum & Cultural Center are partnering to offer a free Cemetery Resource Protection Training workshop on Thursday, Oct. 17.
The event will start at 10 a.m. at the A. Quinn Jones Museum & Cultural Center (1013 NW 7th Ave.) in Gainesville.
The state of Florida has designated funding for the preservation of historic cemeteries and is placing a special emphasis on African American cemeteries. The workshop will teach how to preserve historic cemeteries, the laws affecting cemeteries and funding opportunities that assist with headstone restoration.
The classroom portion of the workshop will run from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., followed by a lunch break (bring your lunch) from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. on the patio space at the museum.
At 1:30 p.m., the workshop will restart with a meeting at Pine Grove Cemetary (1041 SE 22nd Ave.), one of Gainesville’s oldest African American burial grounds, for hands-on training. It is recommended to wear closed-toed shoes and clothes you can get dirty in.
The event is free to attend, but seating is limited. Click here to reserve a spot at the workshop.
