Cold front rolls in, residents say tornado touched down in Springtree neighborhood

Gainesville Resident Donna Sheffield says a tornado came through her Springtree neighborhood early this morning (Nov. 30th) as predicted extreme weather swept through Alachua County.

“Took down a lot of trees, power is out,” she reported about the Springtree development located at the corner of NW 39th Street and NW 34th Avenue.

Resident Lisa Trevisanello posted a photo of a toppled fence and reported that the possible tornado, “Went through my yard.”

“I have never heard that sound before,” reported Nancy Grider of nearby NW 32nd Street.

By daybreak, residents reported that many of the roads are blocked with emergency personnel on the scene trying to restore power.

Trevisanello said the storm “was very quick” and came through around 5:45 a.m.

Resident Alise Cross reported that she woke up to what sounded like hail and later saw, “Ton of limbs down.”

Mainstreet Daily News has reached out to the NWS to see if a tornado can be confirmed.

As a cold front approaches Alachua County and North Central Florida, the City of Gainesville is preparing local shelters.

“City of Gainesville officials anticipate severe weather conditions, including temperatures below 45 degrees Fahrenheit during evening hours, Monday, Nov. 30 through Wednesday, Dec. 2,” the City posted on its Facebook page. “The anticipated temperatures will lead to the activation of the city’s Cold Night Shelter (CNS) Program, and it is expected to remain in effect until overnight low temperatures rise above 45 F. The CNS program normally runs from Nov. 1 through March 31.”

St. Francis House, Inc. and GRACE Marketplace at the Empowerment Center will provide Cold Night Shelter services to people in need of shelter as long as overnight temperatures remain below 45 F, the City reports. The CNS program providers serve additional persons in need of shelter so that families and individuals desiring shelter will have a warm place to stay. St. Francis House provides temporary shelter that is appropriate for families, women and children. GRACE Marketplace primarily serves individual adults.

The National Weather Service Jacksonville office shows a low of 35 degrees in Gainesville for Monday night (Nov. 30th) to Tuesday (Dec. 1st) morning.
