A two-vehicle collision south of Lake City killed a 4-month-old boy Thursday afternoon.
According to a Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) report, the accident occurred at the intersection of U.S. 441 and SW Hillcrest Street in Columbia County. At 3:53 p.m., a 61-year-old Mayo man was driving north on 441 when a vehicle in front of him slowed to turn left on SW Hillcrest Street.
According to FHP, the man failed to stop and collided with the rear end of a sport utility vehicle driven by a 65-year-old Lake City man. The driver, along with a 63-year-old female passenger, were both seriously injured. A 4-month-old male passenger died. All three were wearing seatbelts.
The Mayo man driving the other vehicle was also wearing a seatbelt and was uninjured in the crash.
FHP said its investigation into the incident is “active and ongoing.”
