  • AT&T and the FirstNet Authority launched a new 5G cell site in Horseshoe Beach to improve emergency communications for first responders and residents.
  • The Horseshoe Beach site is the first of more than 135 new FirstNet sites nationwide, enhancing coverage based on public safety feedback.

AT&T, in partnership with the First Responder Network Authority (FirstNet Authority), launched a new 5G cell site in Horseshoe Beach on Tuesday morning to strengthen wireless connectivity for first responders and improve communications for residents and visitors.

According to a FirstNet press release, the new infrastructure was developed in response to feedback from state and local public safety agencies and is designed to improve emergency communications, particularly during hurricanes and other disasters.

AT&T and the FirstNet Authority joined local first responders, public safety officials and community leaders to mark the completion of the site, which is part of the ongoing expansion of FirstNet, the nationwide public safety communications network created by Congress following the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

“Reliable communications can make all the difference when a hurricane is approaching or when someone calls 911 from a remote part of our county,” said Dixie County Sheriff Darby Butler in the press release. “This new site closes a critical coverage gap, giving our deputies and the people we serve a stronger, more dependable connection when it matters most. We’re grateful for this investment in Dixie County and for the collaboration that made it possible.”

The Dixie County Sheriff’s Office and other public safety agencies have historically experienced connectivity challenges in Horseshoe Beach, particularly during hurricane response operations. Officials said the new cell site will strengthen emergency response capabilities and improve operational efficiency for multiple local and state agencies.

“The FirstNet Authority worked hand-in-hand with the Florida public safety community to understand their needs for the network,” said Sheriff Michael Adkinson, chairman of the FirstNet Authority Board and sheriff of the Walton County Sheriff’s Office, in the press release. “This new site is a prime example of how that input and feedback is translating into greater coverage and capabilities for public safety. These investments in coverage will help Florida first responders better serve and safeguard their communities.”

The Horseshoe Beach site is the first of more than 135 new FirstNet sites planned nationwide as part of a series of strategic network investments. Site locations are identified through public safety feedback, coverage enhancement workshops and network data analysis.

“FirstNet is the only network built with and for public safety, and this new, purpose-built site is a powerful example of that mission in action,” said Scott Agnew, president of FirstNet at AT&T, in the press release. “First responders told us where they needed stronger connectivity, and together we’re delivering mission-ready solutions and connectivity for their unique needs. This new site reflects the strength of our public-private partnership and shared commitment to supporting those who protect our communities every day.”

In addition to supporting emergency responders, the new cell site will improve wireless service for AT&T customers in the Horseshoe Beach area.

FirstNet is the nation’s only broadband communications network dedicated exclusively to public safety. Built and operated by AT&T in partnership with the FirstNet Authority, the network provides first responders with priority and preemption capabilities and is designed to evolve based on the operational needs of the public safety community.
