Former Gainesville mayor Mac McEachern dies at 92

Former Gainesville mayor and city commissioner Mac McEachern died on Sunday at the age of 92.

Former Gainesville mayor and city commissioner Mac McEachern died on Sunday at the age of 92.

McEachern served on the city commission for six years during the 1980s and as the mayor from 1983-84.

According to a 2013 WUFT article when McEachern was running for the Gainesville City Commission District 4 seat, “McEachern has resided in Gainesville for 69 years. Born in Levy County in 1931, he moved to Gainesville in 1944 and graduated from P.K. Yonge in 1950. He served in the Air Force until 1954. He has worked for a telephone company, a law firm and served nine years as airport authority in Gainesville.”

McEachern is the third former Gainesville mayor to die in 2023. On Jan. 12, Jim Painter, 71, lost his fight with cancer and on Jan. 14, Stuart “Craig” Lowe died at the age of 65.
