Starting Oct. 1, the majority of greater Gainesville residents will hear the growl of garbage trucks on a different day of the week as the city and county change residential pickup days.
Along with a new day of the week, new contracts will change some collection amounts for yard waste and bulk items.
Gainesville
With a new contract with GFL signed, the company is switching around routes for the garbage bins, recycling, yard waste and bulk items.
Normal curbside collection does not include appliances or electronics. You can schedule a time for those to be picked up.
The collection week is moving from three days to five days and will start in the southwest. You can find an interactive map on the city of Gainesville website to see when your collection will happen.
What gets collected?
Yard waste
- Up to six cubic yards per week (about the volume of three standard refrigerators)
- Must be in bundles, open containers or paper bags
Recyclables
- Paper, cardboard in orange bins
- Cans, bottles, jugs and jars in blue bins

The payment for garbage pickup will also move from customers’ monthly Gainesville Regional Utilities bill to the annual property tax.
Alachua County
For unincorporated county residents living close to Gainesville, garbage collections will move around under a new Alachua County contract with GFL—the first wholesale change to the contract since 2009.
All items (normal garbage, recycling, bulk items, yard waste and appliances) will be picked up on the same day.
