The Florida Park Service Ranger Association named Alachua County’s Michael Ebner as the 2026 Park Ranger of the Year.
Ebner received the award on Tuesday for his work at Devil’s Millhopper Geological State Park and San Felasco Hammock Preserve State Park.
According to a press release, Ebner typifies the Ranger First spirit and earned the award for his positive leadership, creativity and dedication to mentoring others—all of which enhance the visitor experience.
“Michael is an integral part of the San Felasco and Devil’s Millhopper team,” Park Manager Heather Goston said in the release. “His strong work ethic, guidance, and attention to detail have helped bring important park improvements to life.”
Ebner was selected from statewide nominations that represent more than 1,000 Florida Park Service employees.
He was chosen from among district awardees, including Terri Messler of Alfred B. Maclay Gardens State Park (District 1), Sunny Clark of Colt Creek State Park (District 3), Ed Alaniz of Myakka River State Park (District 4), and Guillermo Rodriguez of the Florida Keys Overseas Heritage Trail (District 5).

“Park rangers are the heart of Florida’s award-winning state parks,” said Warren Poplin, president of the Ranger Association. “Michael’s dedication, leadership, and service above self reflect the very best of the Ranger First philosophy, and we are proud to recognize his outstanding contributions.”
The Park Ranger of the Year Award has been presented for the last five years and is sponsored by Tyler Technologies.
Devil’s Millhopper was included in the book “100 Things to Do in Gainesville Before You Die.” To learn more about the site, check out Ronnie Lovler’s story from our Florida Finds series.
