Man dies after shooting at Alachua block party

A 19-year-old Gainesville man died after being shot at a block party in Alachua early Sunday morning.

According to the Alachua Police Department (APD), homicide occurred on NW 126 Terrace near Research Drive around 4:30 a.m. The victim was identified as Kionne Atkins.

APD officers were on the scene because of a large number of people attending an unauthorized block party near the entrance to Copeland Park, reports state.

While attempting to manage and disperse the large crowd, officers heard multiple rounds of gunfire and made their way through the crowd to the area where shots were heard.

Police found Atkins sitting in a white Honda where he appeared to be suffering from a gunshot wound to his torso. Officers immediately began treating the victim using their trauma kits until Alachua County Fire Rescue (ACFR) responded to the scene.

Atkins was transported to UF Health Shands Hospital where he later died.

Deputies from the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office (ACSO) as well as officers from the Gainesville Police Department (GPD) and the High Springs Police Department (HSPD) assisted in dispersing the large crowd.

There is no information about the suspect or a motive at this time. The APD investigation is ongoing.
