The University of Florida recently selected Bart Knowles as the new Chief of the UF Police Department (UFPD).
Knowles, who accepted a position with UFPD in 2010 after retiring from the Gainesville Police Department (GPD), stepped into his new position on Nov. 19. He has served as interim chief since June after Linda Stump-Kurnick, UFPD’s chief for over 20 years, moved into her Assistant Vice President of Public Safety position.
“Chief Knowles will lead our police department with integrity and a vision for the future of this great university and his department’s place in it,” said Brandi Renton, Interim Vice President for Business Affairs, in a press release. “He is eminently qualified to lead UF in the crucial work of protecting our community.”
Knowles started his law enforcement career as a Hernando County sheriff’s deputy in 1988 before transferring to the GPD in 1991. While serving with the GPD, Knowles worked in the uniform patrol, special operations, narcotics/vice, human resources, DEA task force and the state attorney’s task force. He also served as GPD’s SWAT and rifle team commander.
Since joining the UFPD in 2010, Knowles oversaw investigations, community services, uniform patrol division, special events and administrative services before he became the interim chief in June.
“I am honored to serve as chief of our department filled with dedicated officers,” said Knowles in a press release. “We will embody the qualities of excellence as we protect and serve the Gator Nation.”
