Newberry teen dies in hunting accident

A Newberry teenager died Sunday when a firearm was accidentally discharged while hunting.

According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) release, FWC officers responded to a hunting incident that involved a minor in Alachua County around 6:14 p.m.

The preliminary information gathered by the FWC officers indicated that a firearm was accidentally discharged.

Emergency responders transported the victim to UF Health Shands Hospital in Gainesville where he later died from the injury.

In a WCJB article, the victim was identified as 18-year-old Malachi Lancaster, a senior at Newberry High School, and the incident took place off Williston Road south of Gainesville.

The FWC is investigating the shooting.

  1. The end investigation said that Malachi was shot in the back, and a branch activated the trigger. The family has a change.org petition to reopen the investigation. Please search his name, and sign the petition.
