One person was killed and six were injured in five shootings throughout Gainesville over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend.

The first two shootings took place Friday morning near the University of Florida where two people were injured.

According to Gainesville Police Department (GPD) spokesperson Brandon Hatzel in a phone interview, a third shooting took place around 2 p.m. on Friday near 4000 W. Newberry Rd. where one man was shot and transported by family or friends to a local hospital where he later died.

The suspect turned himself in to GPD on Saturday. His name was not released as GPD continues the investigation, according to Hatzel.

On early Sunday morning, a large block party near 500 SW 5th Avenue was dispersing when multiple shots were fired.

GPD officers located two victims shot in the lower extremities. Emergency responders transported the two people to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

A third victim was shot in the leg and transported to the hospital by a friend.

A second Sunday morning shooting occurred around 3:20 a.m. when a juvenile male was shot in the leg in the vicinity of McDonald’s at 1000 E. University Ave.

Emergency responders transported him to a local hospital where he is in stable condition, according to Hatzel.

GPD officers have not identified either suspect in the Sunday morning shootings and continue to investigate both incidents.
