Two firefighters were injured battling a Newberry wood product business that caught fire Monday.
According to an Alachua County social media post, Alachua County Fire Rescue, Newberry Fire Department and High Springs Fire Department units responded at 3:06 p.m. to the blaze at Southern Fuelwood.
Upon arrival, firefighters discovered smoke emerging from a metal building that contained wood stacked on pallets.
According to the release, “When trying to open a door into the building weighing hundreds of pounds, the door fell off its hinges and struck a Newberry and an Alachua County firefighter. Both were taken to the hospital with blunt-force injuries to their legs and other injuries. Both are in stable condition.”
Firefighters continued to extinguish the blaze into the evening. Four engines, four water tankers, two heavy rescue units and multiple ambulance personnel assisted in the incident.
Southern Fuelwood Company, located west of Newberry, produces, “the highest quality cooking and heating wood products made from the finest southern hardwoods available,” according to its website.
