A 19-year-old University of Florida female student was seriously injured Monday morning after being hit by a box truck on the UF campus on Buckman Drive near University Avenue.
According to a Gainesville Police Department (GPD) release, officers responded to the area of University Avenue and Buckman Drive in reference to a box truck hitting a pedestrian.
The collision occurred around 100 yards south of University Avenue on Buckman Drive on the UF campus. According to WCJB, the vehicle was a Krishna lunch box truck.
The preliminary investigation indicated the box truck was traveling southbound on Buckman Drive when the UF student, walking eastbound, entered the road near a marked crosswalk, where she was struck by the truck.
The student was transported to a local hospital under a trauma alert with life-threatening injuries. She suffered multiple fractures, but is improving.
The GPD is conducting a traffic homicide investigation into the details of the collision, which they do whenever an incident is either fatal or the injuries are life-threatening, to determine the probable causes.

Did the student die? (Traffic *homicide* investigation?) This is terrible news!
I hope UF students will be more careful about looking left, right and left before entering/crossing a road, even at a crosswalk, even if there’s a WALK signal counting down the seconds or telling them it’s okay to WALK.
Pedestrians and cyclists ALWAYS need to verify that it’s safe before proceeding into the road.
I have no idea what the circumstances were in this incident, but I see students walking into the road all the time without looking up from their phones…
I sure hope this student was not killed…
Agree with your advice. Every pedestrian should pay attention to their surroundings and avoid being distracted at crucial moments, like when they’re fixing to cross the street.
Main St. Daily News- can you please clarify:
“The GPD is conducting a traffic homicide investigation into the details of the collision.”
Did the student die?
Or is GPD investigating this collision as a crash with severe injuries, vs a homicide investigation?
The student is recovering in the hospital. She has several broken bones.
MSDN- Where is the update??? (Editor’s note: This story was updated with new information regarding the accident.) Who wrote this story?
Thank you for the update and the clarification on what a “traffic homicide investigation” involves.
