The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a winter storm watch for Tuesday evening through Wednesday afternoon that could bring freezing rain to Northern Florida.
According to the NWS, heavy mixed precipitation is possible with a total ice accumulation of up to one-tenth of an inch expected with up to a quarter of an inch possible.
Local counties to be affected include Alachua, Suwannee, Union, Bradford, Gilchrist and Columbia.
Roads, especially bridges and overpasses, will most likely be slick and hazardous and there will be an accumulation of ice on power limbs and tree limbs, which could lead to power outages.
The NWS advises that people should delay traveling, if possible, unless necessary, and to use extreme caution and changes in visibility. Leave extra room between you and the motorist ahead of you and allow extra time to reach your destination while avoiding sudden braking or acceleration. Also, make sure your car is winterized and in good working order.
An Alachua County Emergency Management social media post reminded residents to have their property ready for the cold weather, which includes protecting people, pets, pipes and plants. The post emphasized not leaving pets outside, along with using caution when operating any type of mobile heater and checking with neighbors who have issues with their heating units.
