This past Saturday, the Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) officially released the brackets for this year’s volleyball state playoffs.
The FHSAA regional quarterfinals for classes 1A-3A begin on Tuesday followed by classes 4A-7A on Wednesday. The semifinals, including the first round for the Rural classification, will be held on Saturday.
Five Alachua County schools won district titles to secure automatic bids.
On Tuesday, Class 2A-District 1 champion Oak Hall, the No. 7 seed in the FHSAA Class 2A-Region 1 Quarterfinals, will travel to No. 2 seed Trinity Catholic (Ocala).
The visiting Eagles (14-11) turned their season around when head coach Perry McDonald returned to the program, winning eight of their last nine regular season games.
They moved up to a No. 2 seed in their district tournament and defeated No. 3 seed Destin in the district semifinals followed by a win in the championship game against No. 4 seed Saint Francis Catholic Academy, which failed to earn an at-large bid.
OHS, which won its fifth straight district title, has won four in a row and 10 of its last 11 games.
The host Celtics (14-10), who are ranked 18th overall in Florida in the final FHSAA rankings, swept Oak Hall (No. 201 overall) in the first meeting on Aug. 21.
Newberry (19-8), which has won nine of its last 11 games, swept Palatka in the 3A-District 5 semifinals, which was career win No. 100 for head coach Hank Rone, and they swept Keystone Heights in the district championship game.
The Panthers, who are ranked No. 220 overall, earned the No. 6 seed in 3A-Region 2 and will travel on Tuesday to No. 3 seed McKeel Academy (Lakeland), which is ranked 112th overall. Keystone Heights (17-10) is the No. 7 seed and will play at No. 2 seed Montverde Academy in the other regional quarterfinal.
Santa Fe (Alachua) won its eighth straight district title.
The Class 4A-District 5 champions are the No. 2 seed in Class 4A-Region 2 and will host No. 7 seed Titusville (12-10) in Wednesday’s quarterfinals. The host Raiders (18-9) are ranked No. 6 in 4A and No. 50 overall in Florida.
Gainesville won its third straight district title. The top seed Hurricanes (17-8), who swept Belleview in the Class 5A-District 5 semifinals, swept No. 2 seed Lecanto in the title game.
GHS, which has won eight of its last nine games, is ranked No. 51 overall and No. 8 in 5A. They are the No. 2 seed in 5A-Region 2 and will host No. 7 Jensen Beach (12-14) in Wednesday’s quarterfinals (6 p.m.). The ‘Canes defeated the Falcons, 2-1, at the Nike Tournament of Champions at Celebration Pointe in Gainesville on Saturday, Aug. 30.
Buchholz won the 6A-District 2 title with a 3-1 win against Fletcher (Neptune Beach).
The Bobcats (19-5), who are the highest ranked area team at No. 48 overall in Florida, have won eight in a row. They are ranked No. 7 in Class 6A and the No. 3 seed in Wednesday’s Class 6A-Region 1 Quarterfinals.
It’s been a memorable season so far for the Bobcats, who defeated Santa Fe on Sept. 25 to end an 11-game losing streak to the Raiders, and they also snapped a 9-game losing streak to rival GHS on Wednesday, Sept. 10.
Buchholz will host No. 6 seed Lake Howell (Winter Park) in Wednesday’s quarterfinals. The Bobcats defeated the Silverhawks (21-7), 2-0, at the JJVA Spike Awareness Block Cancer tournament in Jacksonville on Oct. 4.
It has been a good year overall for Alachua County schools.
Santa Fe, GHS and Buchholz are all ranked among the top 51 teams in the state out of 665 teams who are ranked by the FHSAA.
The other four area teams participate in the Rural classification, led by top-ranked Branford (20-4).
The Bucs, who have advanced to the last two state semifinals, are the No. 1 seed in Rural-Region 3 and will host No. 4 seed Aucilla Christian (Monticello) on Saturday at 2 p.m.
Union County (Lake Butler), which lost to Branford, 3-1, in the District 6 championship game, is the No. 3 seed in the region and will travel to No. 2 seed Lafayette (Mayo) in the other semifinal on Saturday. The Tigers (20-8) swept the Hornets (15-6) in the district semifinals.
Williston (9-10), which defeated Trenton (12-13) in four sets to win Rural-District 7, is the No. 1 seed in Rural-Region 4 and will host No. 4 seed Trenton in a rematch.
The state championship games for all classes will be held the week of November 3 at Polk State College (Winter Haven Health Center) in Winter Haven.
