Area girls hoops teams advance in district tournament play

On Monday night, it was survive and move on for some area girls basketball teams, while others had their 2025-26 season officially come to an end.

In the FHSAA Rural Class-District 6 quarterfinals, No. 4 seed Trenton advanced with a 45-30 win against No. 5 seed Bell. The season came to an end for the Lady Bulldogs (9-15), while the Tigers (8-15) advanced to Wednesday night’s district semifinals and will travel to top seed Fort White (14-9) at 7 p.m.

In the other district semifinal, No. 6 seed Union County (Lake Butler) had its season come to an end at 1-17 with a 46-14 loss at No. 3 seed Taylor County (Perry), which will play at No. 2 seed Dixie County (Cross City) (12-6).

The Hawthorne girls basketball team bounced back from Friday’s loss at The Rock with a 47-33 win at No. 5 seed Bronson (6-15) in the Rural District 7 Quarterfinals.

The No. 4 seed Hornets (8-12) jumped out to a 15-2 first-quarter lead and never trailed. They will play top seed Williston (16-2) at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday. In the other quarterfinal, No. 3 seed Chiefland advanced with a 56-20 win against No. 6 seed Cedar Key (6-12).

Junior Nyasia Bivins had a game-high 15 points and senior Brianna Bell had 14 for Chiefland (22-2), which will play No. 2 seed Wildwood (13-4) at 6 p.m. on Wednesday.
