Area teams continue success at Hitchcock’s

A total of four area girls basketball teams are undefeated after two days at the Hitchcock’s Challenge in Alachua.

Gainesville, Buchholz (Gainesville), Hawthorne and P.K. Yonge (Gainesville) were all winners on Tuesday to improve to 2-0 in pool play, which concludes on Wednesday. Bracket play will begin on Thursday.

Hawthorne, last year’s Class 1A state runners-up, defeated Tampa Bay Tech, 56-46, and handed the Class 6A Titans (9-1) their first loss of the season. The Hornets (6-1) will play North Marion (Citra) this afternoon at 5 p.m.

GHS, which defeated North Marion (Citra), 57-48, on Monday, grinded out a 39-25 win against Hilliard on Tuesday. The Hurricanes, who improved to 7-4, will play Tampa Bay Tech on Wednesday at 11 a.m.

P.K. Yonge also moved to 2-0 in pool play with a 62-42 win against North Marion. The Lady Blue Wave (5-3) will play Buchholz on Wednesday at 12:30 p.m.

Buchholz topped Miami Killian, 50-24, to improve to 6-6.

Santa Fe (Alachua) and Columbia (Lake City) are in the winners’ bracket on the boys’ side.

The host Raiders, who received a bye into the winners’ bracket after another team pulled out, won their opening game on Tuesday with a 62-33 rout of St. John Paul II (Tallahassee).

Santa Fe will play Milton, a 46-25 winner against Trenton, on Wednesday at 8 p.m. in the semifinals.

Columbia (Lake City) will play Trinity Catholic (Ocala) in the other semifinal on Wednesday at 5 p.m.

The Tigers (6-5) raced out to a 44-10 lead at the half against Belleview and cruised to a 54-18 win against the Rattlers. Columbia, which also received a bye, will face the Celtics for the second time in a week.

Last week the Celtics defeated the Tigers, 66-50, at the Jim Haley Christmas Classic at Trinity Catholic.
