Area athletes win 5 state track and field titles

Area athletes returned home from the FHSAA state track and field championships with five titles.

The championships took place Wednesday through Saturday at Hodges Stadium on the campus of the University of North Florida in Jacksonville.

On Saturday, Buchholz captured the Class 4A boys 3200-meter relay with a time of 7 minutes, 48.92 seconds. Riley Smith added a third place finish in the 1600 (4:13.00) as the Bobcats boys took eighth place with 21 points.

On the girls side, Buchholz tied for 13th with Kate Drummond taking third in the 1600 (4:58.74) and fourth in the 3200 (10:57.24).

On Friday, Seth Stockton of Columbia (Lake City) won the Class 3A triple jump with a leap of 47 feet, 9 inches.

In the Class 2A competition on Thursday, Santa Fe’s Kyren Washington repeated as state champion in the high jump with a leap of 6-9½. Teammates Kaleb Johnson finished fourth in the high jump at 6-5½ and Payton Pitts took third in the pole vault at 13-3½.

Eastside’s boys placed eighth in the overall team competition with 28 points, led by Ta’Joun Waldon, who won the triple jump with a distance of 45-2½. Also placing for the Rams were Holden Johnson, finishing fifth in the javelin (170-11) and Antoneo Wilson, who placed sixth in the 400 hurdles (56.79). Eastside also took fifth in the 1600 relay (3:21.80).

Suwannee’s Will Wainwright gave the Bulldogs eight points with his second place javelin toss of 175-10.  

The 1A competition started the competition on Wednesday with Oak Hall’s boys team finishing eighth with 26 points. The Eagles were led by Caden Montini, who finished second in the 3200 with a time of 9:31.20 seconds. Montini also placed third in the 1600 at 4:19.81 and helped the Oak Hall 3200 meter relay team to a third place finish with a school record time of 7:56.87 while anchoring the 1600 relay to a fourth-place finish (3:26.25).

“We had a solid day with Caden and Sydney leading the way at their final State meet,” Oak Hall coach Edwin McTureous said. ” They have both been a huge part of the program for the past seven years and will be truly missed.”

On the 1A girls side, Bell’s Nicole Shepherd turned in a first place high jump with a leap of 5-3¾.

The P.K. Yonge girls finished ninth in the overall 1A competition. The Blue Wave were paced by Zuriel Reed, who finished second in the 200 with a time of 24.77 seconds and Nymera Presley in sixth at 25.46 seconds. Reed also finished fourth in the 100 meters with a time of 12.26 seconds, and Presley right behind her in sixth at 12.28 seconds. Presley turned in a second place time of 14.15 in the 100 hurdles.

For Oak Hall, Sydney Miller ran a 2:20.10 time in the 800 for a third place finish.
