Avery heading to UF after stellar water polo career at Gainesville High

Today’s senior spotlight is on Lucas Avery of Gainesville High School.

Avery was on the varsity swim team and the water polo team, where he was a weak side driver. He was a four-year player and a three-year starter for the Hurricanes.

The 2020 boys varsity water polo team went undefeated in district play and was named Region 1, District 2 Champions. Their record was 9-3 this season. Lucas had the best steals-to-turnover ratio on the team at 2 to 1. He scored 20 goals and had 18 assists in the 2020 season. Lucas’ favorite high school sports moment was this past year when GHS beat Lake Brantley, which had been the frontrunner in that district for years. The win over Lake Brantley during the regular season propelled the ’Canes to the top of the district.
