It wasn’t the prettiest performance for the Buchholz baseball team on Tuesday night, but the Bobcats’ offense more than made up for some pitching and defensive mistakes to remain unbeaten.

Junior Blake Brewer had three hits, scored three runs, and drove in three runs, including a two-run homer, as host Buchholz pounded Forest (Ocala) 13-6.

Buchholz improved to 10-0 as the Bobcats sent 11 batters to the plate and scored eight runs in the second inning to take control of the game.

Forest (7-7) took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second against Buchholz junior starting pitcher Aiden Kastensmidt. The Wildcats led with a walk and a single and both runners scored on a throwing error by Bobcats sophomore shortstop Hudson Sapp.

But Buchholz answered back quickly in the bottom half of the inning.

Brewer led off with a double and moved to third on a groundout by Kastensmidt.

Then, the avalanche of hits began.

Junior Zac Brown drove in Brewer with a single to center to cut the Bobcats deficit to 2-1. Sapp followed with another RBI single to tie the game at 2-2. Senior Stuart Ding hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score Sapp for a 3-2 Buchholz lead.

Sophomore Roen Kresak then tripled and senior Kai So followed with a two-run homer to center to make it 5-2. Brewer and Kastensmidt then added run-scoring singles and the Bobcats had an 8-2 lead.

“We made three errors today, but what I was most proud of was the response,” Buchholz coach Ron Brooks said. “You aren’t always going to have a perfect night in high school baseball, but you still have to find a way to win.”

The score stayed 8-2 until the top of the fifth, when Forest scored four runs on only one hit and three walks and a hit batter by Kastensmidt that drove him from the game. An error by Kresak at third brought in two runs and suddenly, Forest only trailed 8-6.

But Buchholz responded again in the bottom half of the fifth, as both Brewer and Brown blasted two-run homers to left for a six-run advantage.

Despite walking six and allowing six runs in 4 2/3 innings, Kastensmidt picked up the win to improve to 5-0.

“We had six walks with Aiden and he knows that’s too many,” Brooks said. “His ability to throw several different pitches gets him out of jams and tonight that was the case.”
