Today’s Rising Senior spotlight is on Sam Cannon of Dixie County High School.

Cannon will play football and baseball for the Bears. One of his best games this past spring came against Chiefland in a narrow 9-8 loss. Cannon was 1-for-2 with two runs scored and two runs driven in. Cannon had two appearances on the mound as a junior and finished with a 3.32 ERA.

His favorite high school sports moment was winning the baseball district championship for the first time in Dixie County’s history during his sophomore season.

However, Cannon said he can’t forget to mention scoring the game winning touchdown on homecoming with an 82-yard run his junior season. Cannon is the quarterback of the football team, but he will also be playing in the secondary on defense. His best game through the air last season was against Mayo Lafayette when he threw for 187 yards. His best game on the ground was against Hawthorne, rushing for 97 yards on just seven carries.

Cannon has been able to maintain above a 3.5 GPA throughout all his schooling. His favorite quote is by Coach Skipp who said, “A team is like a chain, only as strong as the weakest link.”

Going into his senior season, Cannon wants to be a leader on and off the field, and wants to lead his team to an undefeated season, and personally he wants to achieve 800 yards rushing and 800 yards passing.

Dixie County, which made the state playoffs last year, will open up the regular season at home against Taylor County (Perry) on Friday, August 21st.
