Gray stressed the importance of teamwork for undefeated Gainesville High in 2020

Today’s senior spotlight is on Katherine Gray of the Gainesville High softball team. Gray was a Gainesville Sun first team All-Area as a junior. In 2019 she was primarily at second base, but also played at first base and outfield for the Hurricanes. She batted .316, including a .555 batting average in the state playoffs.

Her favorite high school sports moment was last year’s (2019) district championship versus Middleburg.

“It was a close game that went into the 8th inning and I was up to bat when senior Natasha Fox scored on a passed ball,” she said. “Alissa (Humphrey) had been pitching extremely well and I remember watching Tasha score and gaining that feeling of “Wow, back-to-back district champs, all the hard work has paid off!”

Gray was one of four seniors on the GHS softball team, which was 7-0 and ranked No. 1 in the state in Class 5A by MaxPreps. Gray, who was playing first base this season, was considered a great defensive player according to head coach Chris Chronister.

“You are only as strong as your weakest link”, she said when asked about her favorite quote. “Because it truly highlights the importance of teamwork.”

Gray will be attending the University of Florida to double major in Economics and Statistics.
