Newberry, Santa Fe, Bell win district finals; Trenton qualifies for playoffs

Newberry wins District 1A-7

Last night the Newberry volleyball team won the Class 1A-District 7 championship with a sweep of Trenton.  Grace Oelrich led the Panthers (20-3) with 12 kills and six blocks, followed by Katie Oxer with seven kills.  Libero Abby Pace had 16 digs and two aces and setter Sarah Miller dished out 28 assists with nine digs.  

Santa Fe wins District 4A-2, Gainesville loses 6A-5 championship

In Class 4A-District 2, Santa Fe (20-8) swept Marianna to win the title, and Gainesville was swept by Forest (Ocala) in the 6A-District 5 championship.

Bell wins District 1A-6

Last night the Bell volleyball team won the Class 1A-District 6 title with a 4-set win against Union County.  The Bulldogs (18-5) built the momentum early with a 25-21 win in the opening set and a 25-14 win the second set.  It marked the fourth win against the Tigers this season for Bell, which won its third straight district title.  Maddy Sapp led the way with 22 kills, followed by Taria Liles with 18 kills. Michelle Heilig added nine kills & Emma Hutto totaled 44 assists for the Bulldogs, who will host Hilliard in the Class 1A regional semifinals on Tuesday, October 27.

Trenton clinches playoff spot

In the Class 1A-District 7 tournament at Williston, the Trenton Tigers made a run all the way to the district championship game to clinch and FHSAA playoff spot.  The Lady Tigers, who were given the number five seed, swept No. 4 seed Bronson in the quarterfinals on Monday and swept top-seed Chiefland in the semifinals.  However, last year’s Class 1A state runner up Newberry swept the Tigers last night.  The district runner-up Tigers will travel to Crescent City for the Class 1A regional semifinals on Tuesday, Oct. 27.
