Oak Hall School football avoids first loss

The Oak Hall School football team snatched victory from the jaws of defeat this past Friday night.

Eagles’ back-up quarterback Dakota Brower, who was getting his first start with starter Georgi El Semarani out with an injury, threw a 2-yard touchdown pass to tight end Dylan Provencher with fractions of a second left on the clock as the Eagles stunned visiting Seven Rivers Christian (Lecanto), 30-23.

“We had four starters out which is like eight since they start on offense and defense,” said Oak Hall football coach R.J. Fuhr. “Our young team stepped up and played a great game.”

The last drive to set up the game-winning score was a 65-yard drive after the previously unbeaten Warriors (2-1) returned a kick for a score.

Brower was 16-of-23 passing for 182 yards and two TD’s.

“He really stepped up,” Fuhr said.

The Eagles, who trailed 23-22 prior to the game-winning score, improved to 3-0.

“I think the key to our success this season so far has been time of possession and young guys stepping up,” Fuhr said. “Seven Rivers Christian has a very good offense, but they only ran 34 plays. Most of the night on both sides of the ball, we had mainly freshmen and sophomores playing. I’m very proud of how quickly they are maturing.”

Oak Hall will have another tough match-up when it travels to undefeated Faith Christian (Orlando).

“I think the key to Friday night’s game is to continue to control time of possession and we also need to stop their run game and not allow any big plays” Fuhr said. “Last Friday night Seven Rivers’ three scores were a 28-yard touchdown pass, a 62-yard touchdown pass, and a 75-yard kickoff return. We obviously need to fix that.”

The Eagles are currently ranked 4th in the Sunshine State Athletic Conference 11-man football rankings after Week 3 behind Lake Highland Prep (Orlando), Mount Dora Christian, and Christ’s Church Academy (Jacksonville).
