“We had a lot of great shots on goal, but couldn’t seem to score,” said P.K. Yonge coach Rebecca Schackow. “Taylor County was fast to pressure us and very aggressive. Finally, on one of the free kicks, it was Ellie Cervantes who got us on the board with a gorgeous shot. We also moved some of our players around to better attack.”

The third goal was scored by sophomore Lilly Tomlinson, who also picked up an assist.

“Lily was successful in the center of the field tonight, scoring our second goal, and then Paulina Cervantes sped around and past the back line and buried the ball in the back of the net for our third goal.”

Senior goalkeeper Norah Pancoast had one save as the Lady Blue Wave held their fourth straight opponent without a goal.

A total of five area teams had their season come to an end, including three additional teams in 2A-Region 1.

Newberry, the No. 5 seed, was shutout at No. 4 seed Maclay (Tallahassee), 5-0, ending the Lady Panthers’ season at 18-3-2, while No. 7 seed Williston (9-6-1) lost at No. 2 seed Episcopal (Jacksonville), 8-0, and No. 8 Branford (9-10-5) lost at top seed Providence (Jacksonville), 8-0.

Episcopal will host P.K. Yonge in next Monday’s second round. It will be the Blue Wave’s sixth straight regional semifinal appearance.

“A special thanks to my assistant coaches for their insight and expertise and to the captains of our team who are leading their teammates with great courage and strength,” Schackow said.

In the Class 1A Region 1 Quarterfinals, No. 6 seed Oak Hall fell on the road to No. 3 seed St. Joseph Academy, 5-2, and in the Class 3A Region 1 Quarterfinals, No. 1 seed South Walton traveled to No. 8 seed Keystone Heights and won, 5-0.
