High school basketball seniors will get a unique experience on Saturday.
Over 30 girls and boys will participate in The Prep Zone All-Star Showcase at Legacy Park Multipurpose Center in Alachua, including over 20 players in the Mainstreet Daily News coverage area. It includes players from 19 different schools as far south as Lake County, as far north as Columbia County, and as far west as the Tri-County area (Levy and Gilchrist counties).
There will be a girls game at 11 a.m., followed by a boys game at 12:30 p.m. Both games will resemble a college basketball game.
The girls game will feature four 10-minute quarters while the boys game will consist of two 20-minute halves. Plus, the one-and-one free throw returns after the seventh foul with the double bonus in play for the 10th team foul.
Louisiana Tech signee Jayden Terry and her backcourt mate, Jamison Cardwell, highlight the North team from Gainesville High. Cardwell will also be attending a Division-I school and will announce her commitment at halftime of the girls game.
Last week, GHS advanced to its first final four since 1987. The ‘Canes defeated Northeast (St. Pete) in the Class 5A state semifinals before falling to New Smyrna Beach in the state championship game.
The Purple Hurricanes (17-9) finished fifth in the final all-classification girls basketball regional rankings, which were released today.
Other area players include SG/F Israel Hart of Rural region finalist Fort White (16-8), PF Zyon Johnson of Rural region finalist Williston (19-4) and PG/SG Sarah Beaulieu of 3A regional semifinalist Newberry (17-7).
Like Terry and Cardwell, Beaulieu joined the 1,000-point club on Jan. 15 in a 58-52 win at home against two-time defending 1A state champion Hawthorne.
Trenton coaches Lynsey Grant and Sharonda Green will coach the North, while first-year P.K. Yonge coach Jazzmin Bethea and assistant coach Mariel Mayo will coach the South, which has six players from Ocala and former P.K. Yonge basketball player Zion McRae of The Villages.
On the boys side, three players from Class 3A regional semifinalist Newberry (Jacob Green, Logan McCloud and Dyllan Strappy) and SG/SF Xavier Kirkpatrick of Rural region finalist Williston highlight the South team.
Other area players include SG/F Reggie Adams and C Mike Goodale of Chiefland and PF Cian Ronaldo of Bronson.
The South team will be coached by Newberry head coach Patrick Green and assistant Troy Strappy.
The North is highlighted by forward Aidan Bell of 5A regional semifinalist Gainesville, G Cedric Collins of 4A regional semifinalist Santa Fe (Alachua), PG/SG Lorenzo Hill of 2A regional quarterfinalist P.K. Yonge, PG Clark Hausner of Rural region semifinalist Trenton and one of the top 3-point shooters in the state in William Collett of Saint Francis Catholic Academy.
Trenton basketball coach Eric Bullis will coach the South team.
Fans wanting to come and watch both games can do so starting with the ‘open practice’ at 10:15 a.m. on Saturday (girls). The practice for the boys is at 11:45 a.m.
The Legacy Park Multipurpose Center is located at 15400 Peggy Rd. in Alachua.
Admission for the game(s) will be $10 per adult (Day pass), $5 for students, while kids under 5 will be admitted for free. Cash and credit cards will be accepted.
Only high school coaches with FHSAA State Series or FACA Coaches card, media and college scouts will be granted free complimentary admission to the game. No coolers or outside food will be allowed.
There will be a concession stand available and players are encouraged to bring their water bottles.
Rosters will be provided on Game Day.
