There are plenty of things to do this week if you are a high school sports fan. However, if you were already making plans to attend certain events there have been some changes.

This Thursday, the Eastside football team will host Trinity Catholic (Ocala), which played in the Class 1S state championship game last year and is coached by former Gator John Brantley. The host Rams (1-2), who lost at home to Buchholz this past Friday, are looking to even their record after a 1-0 start.

Kickoff from Citizens Field has been moved up to 7 p.m. since it’s a school night. If you can’t make the game, we’ll have the live stream audio available online at Mainstreet Daily News with Cam Parker (Play-by-play) and Joe Baker (Color) calling the game starting at 6:45 p.m.

This Friday, Buchholz was supposed to host Manatee (Bradenton) in a showdown of top 10 teams. However, the Bobcats’ home opener has been moved to Santa Fe High School in Alachua.

The visiting Hurricanes (2-1) are coached by former Gator and NFL player Jacquez Green. The Bobcats, who finished the season unbeaten last year for the first time since 2001, are looking to move to 4-0.

Kickoff is at 7 p.m.

Buchholz and Gainesville flip-flopped. GHS will now host Lecanto in the Class 4A-District 5 opener at Citizens Field.

The Hurricanes improved to 3-0 for the first time since 2012 with a 14-7 win last Friday at Leon (Tallahassee). The visiting Panthers (2-1) lost their first game of the season last week to unbeaten Nature Coast Tech (Brooksville), 37-21, at home.

Originally, the Buchholz game was going to be broadcast on radio, but Friday’s GHS-Lecanto game can be heard on 106.9 FM “I am Country” starting at 6:30 p.m. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.

This weekend (Sept. 13-14), Bell High School is hosting the Lady Bulldog Invitational which features eight area volleyball teams. There will be matches on two courts beginning with Chiefland vs. St. Francis Catholic Academy and Newberry vs. Trenton at 5 p.m.

However, the Newberry vs. Taylor County (Perry) game has been pushed back to 8 p.m. while the Taylor County vs. Eastside game was moved up to 6:30 p.m.

Other participating teams include Crescent City and host Bell. The tournament concludes on Saturday with the championship game at 4 p.m.

GHS, Keystone Heights and Union County (Lake Butler) will head north on Friday to play in the River City Classic at Jacksonville Juniors Volleyball Association (JJVA).

Tonight at 7 p.m., Class 3A Newberry travels to Santa Fe (Alachua) for an Alachua County showdown.

The visiting Panthers (7-2) went 1-1 last week with a 5-set loss to Keystone Heights and a 5-set win at Dixie County (Cross City), while the Raiders (8-3) had a 3-1 win at The Rock, and they also swept P.K. Yonge on the road.

Santa Fe is ranked 46th overall in Florida by MaxPreps and No. 3 in Class 4A. I’ll have a recap of the game tonight on our website.

Then on Tuesday, I’ll have a recap of St. Francis Catholic at Oak Hall. The first serve is at 6 p.m.

This Saturday, Buchholz High School is hosting the Bobcat Classic at Santa Fe College.

Area cross country teams participating include host Buchholz, GHS, Eastside, Newberry, P.K. Yonge, Oak Hall, Santa Fe, St. Francis Catholic Academy, Keystone Heights, Bell, Bradford (Starke), Fort White and Columbia (Lake City). Oh, and there’s kind of a big game in The Swamp on Saturday.

Texas A&M visits Florida in just the seventh meeting all-time (tied 3-3) between the Aggies (1-1) and the Gators (1-1) in this SEC opener. Kickoff is at 3:30 p.m.
