Tonight, we continue our coverage of high school basketball with a ‘live’ broadcast of the P.K. Yonge at Gainesville girls’ game.
Last Friday, the Lady Blue Wave (5-4) defeated The Rock on the road to snap a three-game losing streak. They will look to win for their second straight game at 7 p.m. at The Purple Palace against a GHS team which started 0-4, including a pair of losses at the Insider Exposure Thanksgiving Classic, but has won two straight.
The game will be broadcast as part of the Stephenson’s Septic Tank Services Basketball Game of the Week. On average we will broadcast two basketball games each week through the month of February.

Join Mike Ridaught (Play-by-play) and Hank Rone (Color) for this Alachua County showdown. This is a matchup of state playoff teams from a year ago. The visiting Hornets advanced to the 1A state semifinals last year while the Blue Wave made the 3A state playoffs. The series is tied 5-5 over the last 10 meetings between the two teams, including a 47-45 win by P.K. Yonge last February and a 70-59 win by Hawthorne on Jan., 12, 2023.
Wednesday, Dec. 27 – Hawthorne vs. Williston, 6:10 p.m.*
The defending 1A state champion Red Devils are off to an 8-0 start. The two teams didn’t play last year, but in 2022 Hawthorne edged Williston, 49-46, in a Class 1A-Region 4 Semifinal. C.J. Ingram scored a game-high 20 points and hit two free throws with 3.1 seconds left to ice the game.
Friday, Dec. 29 – Hitchcock’s Tournament (TBD – 2 games)^
Area participants include Buchholz, Columbia, Eastside, Oak Hall, P.K. Yonge, The Rock, Suwannee (Live Oak) and host Santa Fe (Alachua)
Wednesday, Jan. 3 – Hawthorne at GHS, 7:30 p.m.
A rare matchup between the Hornets and the Purple Hurricanes. According to GHS statistician/historian Gil Brodach, the two teams have not met since before the days of MaxPreps. Brodach said this will be the first meeting between the Hornets and the Hurricanes since head coach Anthony Long or coach Tony Wise (late 90s/early 2000s).
Thursday, Jan. 4 – Santa Fe at Eastside, 7:30 p.m.
The Raiders have dominated the series as of late, winning seven in a row including a 67-38 win against the Rams last Jan. 31. Prior to that, Eastside had won 12 of 13 in the series.
Tuesday, Jan. 9 – Buchholz at Williston, 7:30 p.m.
Buchholz is off to a 5-1 start under first-year head coach Elliot Harris. The two teams didn’t play last year. The Bobcats won the last meeting, 46-43, on Dec. 16, 2022.
Friday, Jan. 12 – Eastside at GHS, 7:30 p.m.
After a 7-game losing streak in the series, GHS has won four in a row against the Rams, including a 53-37 win last February and a 48-40 victory on Jan. 13, 2003.
Monday, Jan. 15 – P.K. Yonge at GHS, 7:30 p.m.
This game has been moved up a day to Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. The Hurricanes, who are looking for the season sweep, have won four in a row in the series, including a 61-51 win at P.K. Yonge on November 28.
Thursday, Jan. 18 – Santa Fe at GHS, 7:30 p.m.
Both of these Alachua County schools were able to make a big run in last year’s state playoffs, with Santa Fe advancing to the 4A-Region 2 Final and GHS advancing to the 6A-Region 1 Final. The Hurricanes defeated the Raiders on the road, 56-53, in the first meeting on Dec. 12.
Friday, Jan. 19 – Hawthorne at GHS (GIRLS), 7 p.m.
The defending 1A state champions visit The Purple Palace for an Alachua County showdown. GHS won a close one, 35-33, last year (Jan. 12, 2023). The Lady Hurricanes advanced to the second round of the 6A state playoffs last year.
Tuesday, Jan. 23 – GHS at Williston, 7:30 p.m.
This has been a tough matchup for the 6A Hurricanes, who lost at home to the defending 1A state champions, 70-53, on Dec. 1. The win extended the streak to three in the series. Gainesville’s last win against the Red Devils was 51-46 on Feb. 1, 2022.
Friday, Jan. 26 – GHS at Buchholz, 7:30 p.m.
The host Bobcats won the first meeting this year, 50-41, on Dec. 8, a rare win at The Purple Palace. GHS has not lost two in a row in the series in over 17 years.
Friday, Feb. 2 – GHS at Eastside, 7:30 p.m.
The loser of the game on Jan. 12 will have a chance to earn a split in the series this year. Eastside’s last win against Gainesville was 52-50 on Feb. 5, 2021.
