Today’s Rising Senior spotlight is on Caleb Morgan of Trenton High School.

Morgan will play football and baseball this year for the Tigers. He’ll play linebacker this fall and outfield in the spring.

Morgan was a Gainesville Sun First Team All-Area selection on offense last year after he rushed for 888 yards with 12 touchdowns. He averaged 5.4 yards per carry. He also caught two passes for scores to give him 14 touchdowns as a junior.

His favorite high school sports moment was when he made All-State.  FloridaHSFootball.com named Morgan to the First Team for his play on defense. He finished the 2019 season with 110 tackles, 17 tackles for a loss, and four sacks.  He also caused three fumbles, recovered three fumbles, and had three pass breakups.

Morgan’s favorite quote is “You’re only as strong as your weakest link.”  His goal for his senior season is to win state.

The Trenton football team is expecting to make it back-to-back state playoff appearances this fall. Head coach Bill Wiles returned for his third stint with the Tigers last year and led Trenton to the Class 1A state playoffs.

Who will be at the top 1A-Region 4?

With only four senior starters lost, the Trenton football team should be back in the mix again as one of the top six teams in Class 1A-Region 4.

Several teams from the Tri-county area will compete for the honor of being the region’s best. They include Bronson, which will be led by first-year coach Russell Holley, Chiefland, which enters its second season with head coach John Palmer after advancing to last year’s 1A Region Final, plus Williston and Trenton.

Quarterback Tyler Perry, who transferred from Trinity Catholic (Ocala), had a breakout sophomore season for the Tigers as he threw for 1,101 yards with 17 touchdowns and just three interceptions last year.  He rushed for an area-best 1,969 yards on 251 attempts with 18 scores.

Trenton is scheduled to open up the 2020 regular season on Friday, August 21st, at Interlachen. Last year, the Tigers beat the Class 3A Rams in the season opener.
