Hawthorne rallies past PK Yonge 14-13; remains unbeaten

For the second time this season, the Hawthorne Hornets rallied late to stay unbeaten.  On Friday night, visiting P.K. Yonge built a 13-0 lead but the Hornets scored two touchdowns in the final 5:47 to win  14-13 on Senior Night.  Following a pair of touchdown passes from P.K. Yonge’s Aaron Small Jr. to Tez Williams for a 13-0 lead, the Hornets got on the scoreboard thanks to an 11-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Chaz Mackey to Camron Cohens. 

Then, with 1:48 to play, the pair hooked up again to make it 13-12.  The Hornets went for two, and Mackey ran it in for the one-point win.

Dixie County continues its streak, beats Trenton 48-20

The Dixie County football team is on a roll.  On Friday night in Trenton, Bears’ quarterback Sam Cannon accounted for four touchdowns, including three in the opening half, as Dixie County defeated Trenton on the road, 48-20.  It was the third straight win for the Bears, who improved to 3-1, and their fourth straight in the series against the Tigers.

Columbia falls to 0-2; loses to Florida High 27-14

The Florida High School Seminoles defeated the Columbia Tigers 27-14 in week five of high school football action Friday night. The Seminoles stay unbeaten with the win, improving to 3-0, while Columbia fell to 0-2.

The Tigers will be home next week against Madison County.

Newberry extends winning streak; edges Williston 28-24

On Thursday night in Williston, the underdog Red Devils football team jumped out to a quick 16-0 lead in the opening quarter, only to see the visiting Newberry Panthers come roaring back with 26 unanswered first half points in a 26-24 come-from-behind win.

The Red Devils received the opening kick and marched 68 yards in only four plays, scoring on a 53-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Tiger Days to senior Rashaud Nelson with 9:57 to play in the first quarter.  Then, following a Newberry fumble on a lateral pass, junior Ajavien Anderson fell on the ball for Williston and the Red Devils were back in business.  

Williston marched 47 yards on six plays, scoring on a 22-yard touchdown run by Marland Williams, Jr.  Sophomore Edariyon Wesley ran in the two-point conversion to give the Red Devils a 16-0 lead with 6:03 to play in the first quarter.

Newberry (4-1) would proceed to score the final 26 points of the half, including a score with .8 seconds left for a 26-16 lead at intermission.  

But Williston wouldn’t quit. 

The Red Devils added their final touchdown in the fourth quarter, driving 85 yards and scoring on a 4-yard touchdown run by Wesley with 3:16 to play. Senior Kurt Pitts ran in the 2-point conversion to make it 26-24.  However, Newberry recovered the onside kick and ran out the clock.

Williston, which dropped to 2-3, will host Wildwood for Homecoming next Friday night.  Newberry will host Hamilton County for Homecoming. 

Bronson blasts Cornerstone 42-0

The Bronson Eagles scored 36 first half points, and cruised past the Cornerstone Ducks 42-0 in week five of high school football action Friday night. The win gives the Eagles a 3-2 record, while Cornerstone falls to 0-2. 

The senior quarterback put the Bears on the scoreboard first with a 13-yard scoring pass to junior Brendan Hall, who had three TD catches on the night.  That gave Dixie County a 7-0 lead with 5:01 to play in the first quarter.  After Trenton cut the deficit to one at 7-6 on a 1-yard TD run by junior quarterback Tyler Perry, Dixie County’s Jaydon Malone answered with a 48-yard rushing score to give the Bears a 14-6 lead with 11:00 to play in the first half.

Chiefland wins its first game in a big way

In other high school football action from Friday, Chiefland (1-2) won its first game of the season with a 61-28 win against West Oaks Academy of Orlando.  Freshman Dakota Fisher led the way with 128 yards rushing, followed by sophomore Junior Brown with 102 yards on just 10 carries.  

Bronson improved to 3-2 with a 42-0 win against Cornerstone Charter Academy of Belle Isle and Bell (1-3) lost at home to Interlachen, 16-0.

Buchholz edges Suwannee 59-42 

The Buchholz Bobcats took a 24-21 lead at halftime and held on to defeat the Suwannee Bulldogs 59-42 in week five high school football action Friday night.

With the win, Buchholz goes to 2-1 on the year, while Suwannee drops to 3-2.

The Bulldogs play against Palatka next Friday, while Buchholz faces Gainesville High.
