The Gainesville Police Department (GPD) arrested of a 15-year-old Gainesville High School student on Wednesday for aggravated assault, possession of a firearm on school property, possession of a firearm by a Juvenile and possession of a stolen firearm.
According to GPD, the student arrived at school with the handgun and displayed it while confronting another student. The police department said the display stemmed from an ongoing dispute that had begun the previous day.
The threatened student was leaving the high school with his mother after the confrontation when they spotted the suspect not far off campus. GPD said the suspect reportedly drew the handgun and pointed it at the mother and son.
The two returned to the office and told the school resource officer. GPD officers located and detained the suspect a short distance from the school. The gun was later found to be stolen, and the arrested student was transported to the Juvenile Detention Center.
“The swift actions of the victim, his mother, school staff, and responding officers may have prevented a tragedy,” GPD said in a statement.
