Gas prices plummeted 17 cents in the Gainesville area and nine cents statewide over the past week.

According to a AAA weekly release sent Thursday, the average cost per gallon of gas went from $3.16 to $3.09 in the Gainesville area. In Florida, the price dipped nine cents from $3.12 to $3.03.

The nationwide average increased two cents from $3.07 to $3.09, which, according to the AAA, is the likely result of winter weather hampering gasoline distribution and refining operations.

“If June and July are when we typically see the highest gas prices, then December and January are when we see the lows. And this pattern is holding firm,” said Andrew Gross, AAA spokesperson in the press release. “The national average for gas will probably maintain this slow shuffle higher for the next week or two.”

New data from the Energy Information Administration (EIA) shows gas demand remains strong after it took a step back from 8.33 to 8.27 million barrels per day (b/d) last week. Meanwhile, total domestic gasoline stocks increased by 3.1 million barrels of crude oil (bbl) to 248.1 million bbl.

Thursday’s national average of $3.09 is three cents more than last month’s $3.06. Last year, the price was at $3.35.

Florida has the 21st most expensive price per gallon nationally. Last month, gas was $2.85 per gallon and last year it was $3.38 statewide.

In the Gainesville area, last month’s price was $2.95 per gallon and last year it was $3.43.
