A domestic disturbance in Northwest Gainesville turned deadly Saturday morning when a husband shot and killed his wife before turning the gun on himself.

According to a Gainesville Police Department (GPD) release, a concerned family member called to report a domestic disturbance at 5:53 a.m. in the 6100 block of NW 30th Terrace. The caller said the suspect allegedly pointed a firearm at the victim’s head and the family member said they attempted to de-escalate the situation over the phone before hearing gunshots.

GPD officers responded to the scene and established a perimeter around the residence while attempting to establish communication with the suspect via phone. Due to the serious nature of the call and the report of additional firearms inside the residence, along with a history of domestic-related issues and the suspect having prior military experience, the GPD SWAT Team and Negotiations Response Team were activated and responded to the home.
