A federal jury indicted a Hawthorne man for drug and firearm charges.
According to a Northern District of Florida U.S. Attorney’s Office press release sent Friday, William Hernandez, 27, was indicted for possessing with the intent to distribute five grams or more of methamphetamine, carrying a firearm during a drug trafficking offense, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
Hernandez is scheduled for arraignment at 2:15 p.m. on Tuesday, July 29, before U.S. Magistrate Judge Midori Lowry at the U.S. Courthouse in Gainesville. If convicted, Hernandez faces life imprisonment.
Herendez was arrested on July 5 after he was pulled over for speeding. He did not have a valid driver’s license and didn’t have the vehicle’s registration documents. The officer saw a marijuana blunt in the driver’s side door pocket and, with probable cause, searched the vehicle and reportedly found a pistol that had been reported lost in Orlando along with 42 grams of pressed pills, 2.1 grams of an unknown purple powder in a baggie, 18.6 grams of methamphetamines, a pack of plastic baggies, a digital scale and an ATM receipt for a transaction on Hernandez’s bank account.
The case was investigated by the Drug Enforcement Administration and the Gainesville Police Department with assistance from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys James McCain and Adam Hapner.
