Five middle school students from the Frazer School finished in the top 10 at the MATHCOUNTS state competitions and won the team title.

According to a Frazer School release, for the first time in MATHCOUNTS state competition history, five students from one school finished in the top 10 in the countdown round on March 14.

Hundreds of students participated across Florida in chapter competitions with 250 advancing to the state competition. School teams consisted of four students and one alternate, as the Frazer School team won the team title ahead of second-place American Heritage.

No other team had more than one student advance to the countdown round of 10, with Frazer School placing five in the round.

Those five students were from the Frazer School and included:

  • Edwin Gao, third place. Gao is one of the top four finishers at state who will represent Florida at the national competition in Washington, D.C., in May.
  • Armaan Vora, sixth place
  • Jason Zhang, eighth place
  • Lucas Chen, ninth place
  • Harshitha Guruprasad, 10th place. Guruprasad was the only female at the state competition to advance to the countdown round.

The 45 alternate students also held a competition with Frazer School’s Isabella Mendoza finishing first among the alternates.

Since Frazer School team coach Jake Frazer, who won the MATHCOUNTS state competition as a seventh grader in 2017, coached the winning state team, he will be the coach for Florida at the national competition.

“I was very impressed with the maturity these kids showed at the state competition and the work ethic leading up in preparation,” said Frazer. “I am looking forward to working with Florida’s top four kids and preparing them for the national championship in D.C. in May.”
