
Two Alachua County municipalities are gearing up for April elections, with qualifying periods open for new candidates for a few more days.
The city of Alachua’s qualifying period, which opened Tuesday, Feb. 18, will run until noon on Tuesday, Feb. 25.
Up for election are Alachua’s mayor and Commission Seat No. 2, currently occupied by Mayor Gib Coerper and Commissioner Ed Potts, respectively. Those interested in running can email Alachua Deputy City Clerk LeAnne Williams at le_williams@cityofalachua.org.
Polls will be open in Alachua from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on April 8. The city has declined to release candidates’ names until the qualifying period is over.
The city of Newberry’s qualifying period will open at noon on Monday, Feb. 24 and close at noon on Thursday, Feb. 27. Any citizen interested in running for office should contact Newberry City Clerk Judy Rice at 352-472-2446 or CityClerk@NewberryFL.gov.
Newberry City Commission seats for Group 4 and Group 5, as well as the mayoral seat, are up for election this spring. Currently, the following candidates have announced their intention to run online:

- Tony Mazon (incumbent)
Mayor
- Joy Glanzer
- Tim Marden
Current Mayor Jordan Marlowe will not run for his seat again, as the city commission voted recently to negotiate a contract with him for the position of city manager.
Newberry’s polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, April 8 at the Mentholee Norfleet Municipal Building (25420 W Newberry Rd.).
