High Springs has two seats open for reelection in November and five candidates seeking votes from residents following last week’s qualifying period.
Mayor Katherine Weitz currently occupies Seat 5 for the city and will run against former commissioner Sue Weller and political newcomer Zachary Walter to keep it.
Weitz has been on the commission since 2021, and Weller served for several terms on the dais until stepping down in 2016. Walter, a High Springs native, has served on the Parks and Rec Advisory Board and works at Campus USA Credit Union. He’s also run in past city elections.
Incumbent Commissioner Byran Williams had decided not to campaign for Seat 4, leaving Chad Howell and Julie Ann Tapia-Ruano as the candidates.
Howell ran in March’s special election, losing to Commissioner Wayne Bloodsworth by 62 votes. Tapia-Ruano served on the city’s Charter Review Board earlier this year.
