The League of Women Voters of Alachua County (LWVAC) Health Care Committee will host a program on “The Science Behind Vaccine Requirements” on Wednesday at the Millhopper Branch Library in Gainesville.
This free event will start at 5 p.m. at 3145 NW 43 St.
Dr. Frederick Southwick, Director of the Right Care Alliance of Gainesville, and Dr. Paul Offit, chair of Vaccinology at the University of Pennsylvania, will share their perspectives.
Southwick is an infectious disease specialist and tenured professor of medicine and former Chief of Infectious Disease.
Offitt is an internationally recognized expert for his work on virology and immunology and was a member of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. He is also a co-developer of a rotavirus vaccine.
“For generations, Americans have depended on vaccines to protect their children and themselves from infectious diseases. But the message from the federal government has changed and many are confused, both about the various vaccines and how to balance risks and benefits when deciding whether to get them,” said LWVAC Committee Chair Barbara Frentzen in a press release. “The speakers at this forum have enormous expertise, so if people have questions, this is a rare opportunity to ask two eminent physicians.”
The event is also available for those who can’t attend in person via Zoom using this link. [https://us02web.zoom.us/j/84501784274?pwd=s11FiaBXCmDfppWMhp3Y6fcVeDSYwj.1 The Zoom meeting ID is 845 0178 4274 and the passcode is 352411
