The Gainesville Fine Arts Association (GFAA) is presenting “florida/woman,” a new exhibition of photographic self-portraits by artist Jessica Carter, on display in the organization’s main gallery from July 29 through Aug. 8.
The public is invited to celebrate the exhibition during Gainesville Artwalk from 7 to 10 p.m. on Friday, July 31. Visitors can also view “Drink n Draw: A Community Exhibition,” which will be featured simultaneously in GFAA’s front gallery, located at 1314 S. Main St. in Gainesville.
According to GFAA, “florida/woman” explores Carter’s experience as a transgender woman who has chosen to remain in Florida. Through a series of photographic self-portraits, the exhibition examines themes of identity, belonging and the complex relationship between personal experience and place.
The exhibition statement describes the work as reflecting “feeling trapped in a beloved home” while exploring the contrast between Florida’s natural beauty and an underlying sense of vulnerability. The photographs connect the artist’s personal journey with the state’s landscapes, highlighting the intersection of identity, environment and social issues.
The exhibit is part of GFAA’s ongoing series of artist-curated exhibitions, each presented for a two-week period to showcase the work of regional and emerging artists.
The Gainesville Fine Arts Association encourages community members to attend the Artwalk reception to meet fellow art enthusiasts and experience both featured exhibitions.
The exhibition is funded in part by Visit Gainesville, Alachua County; the State of Florida through the Division of Arts and Culture and the National Endowment for the Arts; and a grant from the City of Gainesville Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs Department.
