In recognition of Gun Violence Awareness Month, Alachua County will host a community remembrance vigil to honor those whose lives have been impacted by gun violence on Saturday, May 31, at Squirrel Ridge Park in Gainesville.
The vigil, hosted by Alachua County Community Support Services and in partnership with Gainesville Fire Rescue, will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. at 1603 SW Williston Rd.
This event will provide a space for collective remembrance, reflection and healing, while offering support and hope to survivors and their families.
A special feature of the vigil will be the creation of art stones—personalized tokens of remembrance. Attendees can write messages of hope, healing or tribute to be placed in the park’s memorial garden to create a lasting symbol of community solidarity and compassion.
The event will also highlight local resources and support services available to those impacted by gun violence.
“We hope this vigil serves as a space for our community to mourn, reflect, and, most importantly, instill hope,” said Project Coordinator Cassandra Moore in a press release. “Together, we will honor the lives affected by gun violence, share in the healing process, and reaffirm our commitment to change.”
