
A fire that broke out Sunday morning at the Suwannee Lumber Mill in Cross City was contained to the facility’s dry kiln and no injuries were reported.
According to a Dixie County Fire Rescue (DCFR) release sent Monday morning, firefighters were dispatched to the mill at approximately 9 a.m. on Sunday after receiving reports of a fire involving the dry kiln. Crews responded quickly and worked alongside multiple partner agencies to bring the blaze under control.
DCFR reported that the fire was successfully contained to the kiln and did not spread to any other part of the facility. Firefighters remained on scene after the fire was brought under control to extinguish remaining hot spots and ensure the area was safe.
No injuries were reported among mill employees or responding firefighters.
Dixie County Fire Rescue credited the rapid response and coordinated efforts of mutual aid partners for preventing the fire from spreading. Assisting agencies included the Cross City Fire Department, Fanning Springs Fire Rescue, the Florida Forest Service, the Florida State Fire Marshal’s Office and the American Red Cross.
The cause of the fire has not been released.
