Hawthorne man, 22, dies in crash near Melrose

A 22-year-old Hawthorne man died Monday night when his SUV left State Road 26 west of Melrose and struck a fence and a large tree, ejecting him from the vehicle.

According to a Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) release, the man was driving eastbound when his vehicle traveled onto the north shoulder of the road. The SUV struck a fence and a large tree and ejected the driver from the vehicle.

Emergency responders pronounced the man dead on scene. He was reportedly not wearing a seatbelt.
