LifeSouth Community Blood Centers has hit a “dire need” for donors after blood usage escalated this week because of several area shootings.

Summer always means fewer donations as residents travel and schools let out, but a press release said this summer has dried up the supply more than usual. LifeSouth has faced a continual shortage over the past year and in June put out a request for O-positive blood.

LifeSouth said it needs all blood types, and the organization is increasing its offers for the weekend.
