SBAC announces special meeting concerning masks

The School Board of Alachua County (SBAC) announced a special meeting concerning masking protocols scheduled for 3 p.m. Wednesday.

In a Tuesday email, the district said the meeting will focus on the issue of masking in the schools with the possibility for an SBAC vote. The meeting will be held at 620 E. University Ave. in the board meeting room.

At last week’s regular meeting, the board voted 3-2 to keep mandatory masking through Dec. 6 before allowing parents to opt their children out of masks from Dec. 7 until the end of the semester.

On Friday, a judge in the Division of Administrative Hearings dismissed a complaint by Alachua County Public Schools (ACPS) and five other Florida school districts.

Jackie Johnson, public information officer for ACPS, announced on Friday that the school district would appeal the judge’s decision and continue its masking protocol.

Since August, the district has conflicted with state officials over Florida’s Emergency Rule 64DER21-15, causing state sanctions.

ACPS received letters from the U.S. Department of Education on Oct. 28 that expressed its support, with the department issuing a cease and desist order to Florida over funding issues.

Next week, ACPS will hold a “State of the District” event at Eastside High School.
