On Wednesday, two area boys soccer players received statewide recognition when they finished in the top three of their classification.
Senior forward/midfielder Aaron Wiley of Keystone Heights finished second in the voting for the Florida Dairy Farmers Class 3A Player of the Year.
Wiley (66 points) led the Indians with 33 goals this season, while goalkeeper David Derk of FHSAA Class 3A state champion American Heritage (Delray Beach) was first with 75 points.
“Aaron started for the Keystone Heights Indians for four years,” said Keystone Heights boys soccer coach Trevor Waters. “It has been fun watching his growth in soccer as a left forward.”
In addition to leading the Indians in goals, he was second on the team in assists with 13.
“He was not only a prolific scorer but also an extremely accurate passer in the box area,” Waters said. “Aaron was co-captain of the high school team and was a great leader and will be missed.”
Eastside senior forward Jonas Traktuev finished third with 36 points.
Traktuev, who finished with 31 goals and three assists, had all three goals in a 3-1 win against Keystone Heights in the 3A-District 4 Semifinals.
Eastside lost in the district championship game at Santa Fe (Alachua), 3-0, to finish the season 9-7-5.
Keystone Heights (11-7-3) received an at-large postseason bid but lost at South Walton (Santa Rosa Beach), 6-2, in the 3A regional quarterfinals. Wiley had a goal and an assist in his final game for the Indians.
Derk was 11-4-1, with three shutouts and a 0.681 goal against average.
