Alachua County Sheriff’s deputies arrested a man Sunday for a deadly shooting that took place in Newberry.

In a Facebook post, the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office (OCSO) said the shooter and the victim knew each other, so the incident was not a random act of violence.

The ACSO arrested David Martin Jr., 19, in connection with the shooting and is holding him on a $500,000 bond. It has not announced charges.

In a phone interview, Newberry Mayor Tim Marden said detectives are still investigating whether the shooting was self-defense.

“It seems like an isolated incident between two people who had some kind of ongoing disagreement,” he said. “It’s not part of a bigger picture that the community needs to be concerned about at this point, but we’ll know more in the next few days as the ASO digs into it.”

Marden said deputies apprehended the suspect with 30 minutes of when the shooting occurred, indicating some level of cooperation from the suspect. The town was not put on lockdown.

“At the end of the day, it’s sad that people feel like this is the answer they have to turn to,” Marden said. “I hate to hear that something escalated to such violence.”
